Current Situation

The Role of FCR in Direct Grid Stability.

Power grid imbalance

A battery container is vital for managing grid imbalance by storing energy and releasing it when needed, enabling peak smoothing, demand cutting and energy arbitrage. This allows companies to take advantage of price fluctuations.

FCR delivery requires a frequency meter on the equipment, which continuously measures the grid frequency. When deviating from the standard frequency of 50 Hz, the equipment adjusts the power output: an increasing frequency reduces the power supply or charges the battery, and a decreasing frequency increases the power output or injects energy into the grid.

Battery containers can thus offer their flexible power as backup for grid stabilization and receive compensation for it, regardless of whether the battery container is actually deployed by TenneT. In this way, one can earn without degrading the battery. During this period, the battery owner cannot trade with price fluctuations. Participation in a pool is most interesting when there is little grid imbalance.

However, with significant imbalance, using battery containers for trading in the FCR market may be more advantageous. Indeed, in this market, with 4-hour blocks, price differences can range from ā‚¬200 to ā‚¬500 per MWh or even more. This can lead to faster payback and fewer charge cycles per year compared to a dynamic energy contract. In the FCR market, the greater the storage capacity, the higher the potential returns.

Selling CO2 rights

As of July 1, 2024, employers with more than 100 employees must track the CO2 emissions of their workforce, as part of the goal to reduce 1.5 megatonnes of CO2 by 2030. In this context, battery storage systems play a crucial role in helping companies reduce their carbon footprint. This is critical given the upcoming tax on carbon emissions.

Furthermore, the versatility and flexibility of our EMS enables accurate energy monitoring, which can be used for utility bill verification, carbon audits and both energy and carbon trading. This technology can be deeply integrated into energy systems, where it measures and evaluates energy profiles of process equipment and machinery. This allows further energy efficiency and reduction measures to be integrated into the system, contributing to the overall reduction of the carbon footprint and meeting climate goals.

Limited off-take or injection from power grid?

Energy hubs can be a solution if you cannot fully utilize your maximum connection capacity. Several companies can join a centrally located battery storage system, also called an energy hub. Each company has its own maximum contracted capacity for offtake and injection. Thanks to our smart software, electricity is distributed as optimally as possible to all connected parties. This means that even if you experience limitations in, for example, power injection to the grid, you can still achieve more independence and be more efficient with your power in cooperation with your neighbor. For example, you can sell your generated solar power to your neighbor at a more favorable rate than to the grid, while your neighbor pays less for this power than he would when buying from the grid.

This graph shows energy withdrawal and injection into the power grid, taking into account the maximum connection capacity and contracted power. The model reflects the practical limits of energy use and return, providing a realistic picture of energy flows.

Heatmap of charge state

This diagram clearly shows the times when the battery is full (indicated in green) and empty (indicated in red). Ideally, one aims for a balanced 50/50 split between full and empty, indicating full charge and discharge of the battery container. This has a favorable impact on both payback time and yields. Furthermore, it can be seen that battery performance decreases in the winter months, which is related to the lower solar yield during this period.
