What are charging stations?
Charging stations are electric charging points designed for electric vehicles (EVs). They provide the electrical energy needed to charge an electric vehicle. Charging stations are essential infrastructure for the growing population of electric cars and contribute to more sustainable mobility. There are different types of charging stations, including regular AC charging stations for slow charging and fast chargers (DC charging stations) that can charge an EV’s battery in a short period of time. They are often found in public places such as parking lots, gas stations and near private homes. Charging stations make electric driving more accessible and help reduce CO2 emissions in the transportation sector.

How many solar panels needed for charging station?
If you drive 15,000 kilometers annually, you end up with 2,475 kWh. According to the Consumers Union, a new solar panel delivers an average of 405 kW per year. This means you need seven solar panels to power one car for a year. At 20,000 kilometers, you need 9 solar panels.
On average, how long does it take to (fully) charge my electric car?
The charging rate of an electric or hybrid vehicle depends on a few factors, including:
- The maximum charging speed of the charging station;
- The battery capacity of the vehicle;
- The condition of the vehicle’s battery.
A charging station at home can charge up to 3-phase 32A, this means: 22kW. Not every fully electric car can handle this charging speed. For example, a Volkswagen ID.3 can charge up to 11kW (bj. 2020) and a Jaguar I-Pace (up to bj. 2020) can charge up to 7.4kW. If you choose a home charging station that can charge up to 3-phase, it is best to allow for a charging time of about 8 hours. When you purchase a 1-phase charger, you can expect about 12 hours of charging time. With a fast charger, sometimes even a charging speed of 1,000 kilometers of range per hour can be achieved. Thus, the car can get to 80% range in as little as half!
What is the difference between an AC charging station and a DC charging station?
AC charging poles provide alternating current and are often used for slow charging at home or in public locations. They are standard and suitable for most electric vehicles. DC charging stations provide direct direct current and are mainly used at fast charging stations along highways. They offer faster charge times and are ideal for longer trips. Not all vehicles support DC charging, so compatibility may vary.
